The Public Education Reform Act of 2007 (DC Act 17-0038) established the Department of Education under the leadership of a Deputy Mayor for Education. Enacted by the DC Council in April 2007, the Act directs the Office to plan, coordinate, and supervise the public education and education-related activities under its jurisdiction, including development and support of programs to improve the delivery of educational services and opportunities, from early childhood to the post-secondary education level.

Public Education Personnel Reform Ammendment Act of 2007* January 22, 2008 This act aims to right-size DCPS central administration by reclassifying non-union employees as at-will employees.
